Startups are bringing the power of coding to non-specialists and vying for a piece of the nebulous — but always-hot — world of “business process automation”. Tech industry research firm Gartner predicts as many as 70% of new applications will be made with no/low code software by 2025.

So the economy’s not great right now — but there have been worse moments to be selling supercharged spreadsheets, automated workflows and piles of easy-to-grab templates (preferably all with a hearty sprinkling of AI). Companies are terrified that GenAI will leave their tech stacks in the dust — hence the clamour to throw sacks of money at new dev tools.

Investors are duly chasing anything with a whiff of ChatGPT. In what Sifted’s calling the era of the silly seed round, French startup Poolside raised a $126m seed round in August to build a ChatGPT-like system trained on code. It won’t be the last big raise in 2023 either: even if we’re all cutting back, software finds a way to force open the purse strings.
