Longevity

There are a lot of crazy attempts to reverse ageing or to find an actual “cure” for dying, including gene-altering drugs, cell-reprogramming and cryogenic chambers. €500 a month longevity clinics could soon be the norm for the upper middle class in Europe. In 2023, longevity-specific startups raised $126m in Europe, declining from the $366m the sector pulled in 2022, in line with the overall slowdown in tech last year.

Silicon Valley heavyweights — techies including Larry Ellison and Jeff Bezos are spending big bucks on trying to beat death - at least by a couple of years. And big pharma is not just observing this from the sidelines. Novo Nordisk’s diabetes treatment Ozempic — arguably the world’s most famous drug — has shown promising results for repairing DNA damage in mice.

But even as tech progresses and wallets open, there’s a lot we don’t know about ageing or how to slow it: research still has a long way to go before it can show us that what works on mice will also work on humans.
