No code & dev tools (2024)
Code is code — does it matter who writes it?
Last updated: 12 Dec 2024
Market 101
During Google’s quarterly earnings call in October 2024, CEO Sundar Pichai said that more than a quarter of new code created at the company is now generated by AI before it’s reviewed by engineers; in March last year, Microsoft executive Scott Guthrie said that 40% of GitHub Copilot’s AI-generated code is left unmodified by users; and at the Abundance360 summit Emad Mostaque — founder and former CEO of Stability AI — said that there will be no programmers within the next five years.
Plainly, no code is just someone else’s code — and that someone happens to increasingly be AI. The market’s been hungry for productivity boosts and efficiency gains, meaning cost-friendly tools — no code and dev tools — to complement both technical and non-technical talent are in hot demand.
No code and dev tool startups serve two different user bases. No code is traditionally built to enable non-technical teams to work more comfortably with data and analytics, typically in “automatable” sectors like marketing or e-commerce. In practice, that means drag-and-drop functionalities, customisable action triggers and vertical integrations with popular business softwares, for example.
Dev tools, meanwhile, are built to aid technical teams in a number of areas — including code generation, security, workflows, review and testing processes. They aren’t (yet or entirely) replacing the work of humans, but rather supervising, automating and optimising.
According to Sifted data, dev tools startups have raised 6x the amount of those building no code tech in 2024. The median round size for dev tool startups increased 166% from €2.1m in H1 to €5.6m in H2, while the figure for no code startups is down-49.71%.

Beating legacy
Developers already work with established software companies, many of which are building advanced features of their own to be integrated into workflows that users are already familiar with — they’re also comfortably priced against existing enterprise contracts. GitHub’s co-pilot is a good example of what startups are trying to emulate with a fraction of the resources.
While the existence of legacy players is arguably almost never a good enough reason not to build a company, startups will need to focus on so-called ‘super niches’ to scale up and iterate on common frustrations with existing products.
The Frankenstein dilemma
Can one ever build something that will likely kill them? Figuratively, that’s a common consideration in the dev tools space — like the story of Victor Frankenstein, the hubris-driven scientist indirectly killed by the monster he created.
Technical talent is expensive, and dev tools companies require the best in the market. The highest bidders are securing ambitious employees who are willing and able to build the most advanced products, even if they directly threaten their colleagues' livelihoods.
But startups will still need a market to serve for years to come. While most people will be able to code with ease, the consequence to developers and engineers will likely be upskilling and stronger barriers to entry. Headcount cuts, however, can’t be ruled out for the least productive.
Coding the coder
Most — if not all — large language models (LLMs) are now able to generate professional level code. Some do it better than others, and they cyclically overtake one another with each product update. While most dev tools platforms operate as aggregated points of access to established LLMs, engineering-specific foundational models are planning to gain a competitive edge over generalist ones.
That’s the case for now Paris-based Poolside, Europe’s best funded dev tools startup, which is building engineering-specific foundational models and assistants and has some $625m to back its scaling process.

Sifted take
No code has been around for longer, and investors have already backed a few unicorns in the space — but dev tools seem sexier: they’re sprouting at a faster rate, and their scalability appeal is already attracting bigger sums from some of the world’s most prolific investors such as Bain Capital, Index Ventures and Accel.
