No code
Step forward, citizen developers
Last updated: 23 Jun 2022
Market 101
Gone are the days when you needed to hire developers to get your startup off the ground, or take up IT teams’ precious time to launch new projects. Using “no code tools”, even the non-techies among us can now build websites, spreadsheets, forms and much more through templates, drag and drop or logical sequencing. While this is not exactly a new phenomenon — Excel is in many ways the OG no code tool — there has been a sharp uptick both in supply and demand, with increasingly sophisticated tools emerging to address a persisting shortage of technical talent.
That’s not to say that no code is a cure-all. Whether they’re targeting nontechnical workers (“no code”) or developers themselves (“low code”), no code solutions largely address internal workflows rather than enabling customerfacing applications. To further spur adoption, no code startups need to demonstrate their value in freeing up developers’ time for tasks beyond security and maintenance, and prove that sufficient governance can be built into their products. Beyond the initial hype, they’ve still got a long road ahead of them.

Trends to watch
1. We need to talk about technical debt
→ One concern developers have about non-technical coworkers adopting no code solutions is “technical debt” that can pile up when adopting simple solutions instead of better ones that take more time to implement.
→ To address this, startups need to integrate appropriate “guardrails” into their products that are tailored to their user personas and prevent them from getting ahead of themselves.
2. Simpler, but still blooming hard
→ No code’s selling point is accessibility, but many users will still face learning curves when adopting platforms, threatening customer retention.
→ With the sector becoming increasingly crowded the pressure is on startups to better educate their users on how best to use their products, and offer complementary services from training and onboarding to guidance on governance and business impact analysis.
3. SaaSy challengers
→ One way to characterise the no code market is as a competition between startups as standalone providers and the big SaaS platforms — some of which are starting their own code-stripping projects — that want to snap them up.
→ Others see no code not so much as a sector in its own right, but as an approach through which startups transform one vertical at a time — leaving room for more than just a handful of winners.
4. Cracking the (no-)code on integration
→ While no code solutions are increasingly offering integrations with each other, one key challenge lies in their fit with legacy systems.
→ A smoother transition between no code and high code systems will be key to the sector’s long-term success, yet integration companies lack incentives to undertake this work.

Sifted take
Perhaps unsurprisingly, startups have been the earliest and most fervent adopters of no code solutions to date. But the sector’s biggest opportunity — and challenge — will lie in capturing the not-so-scrappy and experimental enterprise market, where cultural barriers to adoption will likely be much higher.
