Mental health
The sector that’s in a whole new headspace
Last updated: 21 Apr 2022
Market 101
For mental health startups, the biggest challenge was once battling taboo — now it’s meeting demand. The pandemic not only moved the search for and delivery of care online, but led to an uptick in people seeking mental health support. In fact, startups are now as likely to target companies, rather than individuals, to provide their services as employee benefits.
By turning mental health support into a pocket-sized, on-demand experience, this first generation of startups has primarily targeted the availability and convenience of care. Yet there’s still plenty of work to do, from addressing underserved user groups to improving diagnosis and evaluation. If startups have emerged from the twilight of taboo, they now need to earn their spot in the limelight.

Trends to watch
1. What business model will win out
→ Startups’ choice of business model will be critical to winning over customers and scaling up.
→ Startups hiring in-house therapists may be slower to scale than those that match client and expert, or provide therapy content — but by being able to impose their own hiring requirements, they may find it easier to ensure quality care.
2. Blind spots
→ With most startups focused on improving wellness or moderate cases of depression or anxiety, patients with serious mental illnesses often lack access to digital care.
→ These patients represent a smaller market with less competition and, considering the costs and challenges, are arguably where tech could have the biggest impact.
3. Differentiation
→ With more and more startups funnelling patients into similar pathways, it’s becoming harder for digital therapy providers to stand out from the crowd.
→ While startups are starting to add features in adjacent areas like exercise and sleep, in the future there may also be apps tailored to specific demographics, such as children.
4. Going deeper
→ In contrast to their consumer-facing counterparts, a new wave of startups is using deeptech to better diagnose mental health issues, measure the effectiveness of treatments or create altogether new ones.
→ Their approaches range from evaluating biomarkers and facial expressions to applying technologies like VR in therapy environments.

Sifted take
The sudden explosion in demand has been a boon to mental health startups — but the speed at which some are racing to meet this demand may be at odds with the time it takes to develop a thoughtful approach. In a sector where trust and effectiveness is key, in the longer term startups may compete not only on the user-friendliness of their services but in providing concrete evidence that their methods actually work.
