Digital health (2021)
A new frontier in patient power
Last updated: 9 Dec 2021
Market 101
Healthcare has always caused a funding headache for governments and insurers. While expenditure in the sector has risen steadily over time, innovation has been harder to come by in a world governed by legacy IT systems, complex reimbursement processes and fragmented licensing laws. It took a pandemic for digital health startups to come into their own, buoyed by a massive uptick in demand for remote consultation and treatment.
Telehealth is merely the tip of the iceberg, though. Startups are accelerating their efforts to remake health systems by developing or collaborating on new tools for patients, doctors and insurers. Tech companies are working towards a complete overhaul of our current system whereby patients interact with centralised providers only once they’re sick. Their goal is to allow consumers to proactively take care of their health, wherever and however it suits them, all while unburdening healthcare staff. To arrive there, startups will need to work with each other to build a web of insights from prevention to diagnosis to discharge.

Trends to watch
1. Collaboration, not competition
→ Realistically, it will be difficult for any one company to own the entire healthtech value chain, from prevention to diagnosis to treatment.
→ As leaders in the field have begun snapping up smaller companies to integrate their services, the future of digital health may lie in companies building up the ecosystem together to offer different entry points depending on patient need.
2. Winning online and offline
→ Patients may complete consultations and monitor their conditions digitally, but still require in-person examinations or assistance.
→ Nailing the customer experience will become a matter of smoothing the transition between online and offline as much as possible. At the same time, adding a physical footprint to digital services may slow down expansion efforts.
3. Towards wellbeing and prevention
→ While our current health system is primarily focused on providing care and treatment, a greater shift towards wellbeing and prevention is under way.
→ Underpinning this trend is the possibility of providing increasingly personalised insights based on a wealth of new data — for example from wearables — and advances in analytics and AI.
4. The problem with scaling
→ To scale across borders, consumer-facing healthtechs need to adhere to regulations that may differ not only from country to country, but region to region in Europe.
→ Startups focusing on SaaS may have an easier time scaling internationally, as rules for plugging into healthtechs, rather than operating them, tend to be more lax.

Sifted take
So far, innovation in digital health has mostly revolved around creating new user experiences. But there are gradual changes under way in the world of health analytics, as well as shifts in the sector around data sharing and interoperability, which will be crucial to support further collaboration and the seamless integration of different services.
