Crypto

Less dogma, more YOLO

Last updated: 7 Apr 2022

Market 101

Initially united by the dream of a decentralised financial system outside the purview of government, the crypto crowd has since expanded beyond the die-hard ideologues and loosened up a little. Its newest recruits include those less interested in the fundamentals of blockchain protocols and more in their applications in art and gaming, and retail investors who are mostly sticking around for the lols. Together, this eclectic mix pushed crypto to highs that, for many investors, are too big to ignore.

Lucky for them, there’s plenty of low-hanging fruit to pick — from crypto solutions that support the creator economy to those bridging crypto and fiat systems. On the more hard-nosed side there are many startups are grappling with specific aspects of the “blockchain dilemma” — the idea that these communal ledgers must sacrifice either decentralisation, security or scalability. That kind of technical nitty-gritty often remains too complicated for the average VC or consumer. To take crypto from obscure to eclectic to ubiquitous, there’s work to do on both sides to increase understanding and accessibility

The new generation of crypto startups can no longer rely on early adopters and superfans to spur growth, as these have already been captured by existing players. Instead, the real test lies in creating products that double down on user friendliness and accessibility and introduce compelling use cases to turn crypto into a broader church.
