Crypto
Less dogma, more YOLO
Last updated: 7 Apr 2022
Market 101
Initially united by the dream of a decentralised financial system outside the purview of government, the crypto crowd has since expanded beyond the die-hard ideologues and loosened up a little. Its newest recruits include those less interested in the fundamentals of blockchain protocols and more in their applications in art and gaming, and retail investors who are mostly sticking around for the lols. Together, this eclectic mix pushed crypto to highs that, for many investors, are too big to ignore.
Lucky for them, there’s plenty of low-hanging fruit to pick — from crypto solutions that support the creator economy to those bridging crypto and fiat systems. On the more hard-nosed side there are many startups are grappling with specific aspects of the “blockchain dilemma” — the idea that these communal ledgers must sacrifice either decentralisation, security or scalability. That kind of technical nitty-gritty often remains too complicated for the average VC or consumer. To take crypto from obscure to eclectic to ubiquitous, there’s work to do on both sides to increase understanding and accessibility

Trends to watch
1. Scaling the blockchain
→ Some existing blockchains are struggling to rapidly process the high number of transactions caused by the influx of crypto newbies.
→ Startups are now focusing on improving scalability, whether by developing entirely new protocols (“layer 1” features) or building better platforms and networks on top of existing ones (“layer 2”).
2. Infrastructure plays
→ For all its ambitions of becoming an alternative financial system in its own right, crypto remains dependent on transfers from or back into fiat currencies.
→ Startups are supplying the infrastructure to better connect crypto platforms to the traditional economy, whether by functioning as compliance service providers or payment gateways.
3. DeFi vs fintech
→ Decentralised finance (DeFi) offers the possibility of creating a parallel financial system centred on peer-to-peer transactions that don’t rely on intermediaries like banks.
→ But with its success dependent on the mass adoption of underlying blockchains like Ethereum, the sector may evolve to focus on synergies rather than competition with fintech, for example by providing infrastructure like smart contracts.
4. Wild west no more?
→ Once central to its appeal, the lawlessness of the crypto universe has since become its Achilles’ heel, with each hack raising more awkward questions.
→ Startups are now doubling down on custodial solutions, like developing the next generation of wallets for users to safely store their assets.

Sifted take
The new generation of crypto startups can no longer rely on early adopters and superfans to spur growth, as these have already been captured by existing players. Instead, the real test lies in creating products that double down on user friendliness and accessibility and introduce compelling use cases to turn crypto into a broader church.
