Officials acting on behalf of bankrupt Swedish gigafactory Northvolt have asked former employees if they would consider returning to work under a new owner, according to reports.

An email sent to 3,000 employees at the end of last week, signed by Northvolt bankruptcy trustee Mikael Kubu, polled ex-employees on whether they would return to their roles at the company, Swedish media Norran reports.

Founded in 2016, Northvolt produced batteries for EVs and energy storage. The company raised over $13bn to pursue its goal of building a European battery supply chain to rival China’s dominance of the industry.

Northvolt filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US in November last year, with founder Peter Carlsson stepping down as CEO, remaining as an advisor and board member. Months later, the company filed for bankruptcy in Sweden.

The company’s administrators are in the process of considering bids for Northvolt’s Swedish assets, which include its factory in Skellefteå, in the north of Sweden, and Northvolt Labs, an R&D centre in Sweden.

At the end of June, Mikael Kubu told Swedish public broadcaster Sveriges Radio that the company had received at least one bid, from a foreign party.

Sifted approached Kubu for comment.
