US Gen AI leader Anthropic is opening offices in Paris and Munich as the company continues to hire at pace across Europe.
The new hubs will bring Anthropic’s offices in the region to five, on top of existing locations in London, Dublin and Zurich.
As part of the expansion the company plans to recruit teams that span from research and engineering to sales and operations. Anthropic didn’t share a specific number, but earlier this year announced it planned to double the size of its European workforce by creating 100 new roles across the region.
The US scaleup was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees to build AI models focused on safety, and has become one of the global leaders developing large language models (LLMs). It achieved a $183bn valuation earlier this year when it raised a $13bn Series F.
Anthropic says EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) has become its fastest-growing region, with the company’s flagship AI model Claude being adopted by customers including BMW and Sanofi, as well as startups like Swedish vibe coding platform Lovable, German fintech N26 and French healthtech unicorn Doctolib.
Run-rate revenue in EMEA has grown more than 9x in the past year, according to the company, although it did not share revenue figures.
“The business leaders I speak to are clear-eyed on both the immense opportunity that AI development represents and the critical importance of safety, reliability, and public trust,” said Chris Ciauri, Anthropic’s managing director of international, in a statement.
“We’re doubling down on sustained EMEA growth and building the team our European users need.”
Competing for top talent
Competition for top AI talent is heating up across Europe, pitting well-funded homegrown rivals like France’s Mistral alongside Big Tech players that’ve recently expanded to the region.
OpenAI has opened an office in Paris and in Munich; earlier this year, Canada and US-based AI startup Cohere also set up shop in the French capital. Google is opening a 4k-person office in London later this year and Microsoft is planning a new AI hub in the UK capital.
Anthropic has been aggressively hiring in its existing European hubs, offering salaries of up to £340k to top AI engineers in London.
In August the US scaleup also hired three cofounders and a number of senior employees from London-based AI startup Humanloop.
