Sifted’s latest edition of this annual ranking lists the 100 most-promising European and Israeli B2B SaaS startups valued under $1bn in 2024. This year's methodology builds on previous editions of the Rising 100, integrating data-driven scouting with startup evaluation conducted by judges from our editorial and research teams — reflecting broader industry trends around the adoption of AI and data-driven tools into VC. 

To be eligible, companies had to meet the following criteria: launched in 2017 or later; estimated valuation between $100-999m; fundraised any funding round in or after 2018; private and independent; and sells software products to other businesses (if there is a hardware component, it is off-the-shelf and a mechanism through which to sell software products rather than the core IP of the business).

Spanning 16 countries and 26 cities, this promising cohort of European and Israeli B2B startups is backed by more than 671 investors, angels and accelerators.

B2B SaaS Rising 100 (2024)

Few pursuits are more urgent than boosting cancer survival rates, and a rising number of European early-stage startups are leveraging new methods to do just that. 

As complex as it is to combat the disease, cancer tech players are now equipped with more powerful data-driven weapons to advance their missions. The spread of new applications we’re seeing is wide and includes digital patients’ pathway solutions, AI-powered drug design and discovery, clinical trials support and predictive biomarkers for cancer therapy.

Importantly, startups are creating efficient solutions outside of traditional biotech approaches. In-silico modelling, which uses computer simulations to model biological processes as opposed to lab-based techniques, is a prime example of the new approach to outrunning cancer. And the results are showing promise. 

Sifted scouted hundreds of early-stage oncology startups to map out the cream of the crop, scanning all rounds up to seed stage and young unfunded companies with a cancer focus. Startups with relevant tech stacks but limited oncology focus were excluded. We then scored companies on a weighted methodology accounting for momentum, team strength, growth signals and product differentiation. Below is the result.

Sifted compiled a ranking of 100 business-to-business SaaS startups using a data-based methodology. The analysis, which set out to predict which SaaS companies would someday join the ranks of the $1bn-plus valuation startups, or unicorns, was based on several key metrics, including companies’ financials, cap table strength, product differentiation, momentum and market opportunity.

Spanning 19 countries and 34 cities, this cohort of European and Israeli soonicorns is backed by more than 860 investors, angels and accelerators.

This Sifted Intelligence report lists 100 high-flying business-to-business SaaS companies that could someday join the ranks of Europe and Israels's $1bn-plus startups.

B2B SaaS Rising 100 (2023)

Using the Sifted database and Dealroom, our Intelligence team has compiled a list of Europe's top 100 deeptech startups and scaleups to watch in 2023. The following methodology was used to identify the most promising ventures within the European deeptech sector. 

Criteria for selection: European HQ; launched from 2015 onwards; raised $30m+ in funding; maximum valuation of $999m (i.e. excl. unicorns); private and independent (i.e. not acquired).

Companies were then evaluated by the strength of their management team and investors; market opportunity and competition; and, the quality of their product and technology, marketing and distribution channels, and strategic partnerships.

Overshadowed for months by software and other buzzy crazes, deeptech has now resurfaced as one of Europe’s leading verticals. 

The European deeptech startups to watch in 2023

Although like most European tech ecosystems it suffered amid market shakes — year on year VC funding was down 43%, from $21bn in 2021 to $12.1bn in 2022, according to Dealroom — there are signs that 2023 is looking a little brighter. Funding into German startups fared better than expected in the first quarter of the year, up 28% on Q4 2022.

Sifted has put together a ranking of the 50 hottest startups to watch — from seed right up to growth stage — based on funding momentum, market opportunity, competitive advantage and investor strength. 

While some of Europe’s biggest ecosystems felt the chill of the tech slowdown in 2022, both Switzerland and Austria had strong years.

Nordic techies have clearly blazed a trail in Europe over the past two decades — consistently punching above their weight. 

The region has given rise to global giants like Spotify, Klarna and Skype, and its startup investment per capita far exceeds the regional average for many.

Like most European tech ecosystems, Nordic VC investment took a hit across the board in 2022, falling 29% year-on-year. But growing investor interest in core sectors — such as climate tech and sustainability — and a robust tech culture are tempering Nordic’s tech winter.

Europe’s unicorn investors

Unicorns aren’t the rare beasts they once were in European tech — despite the long odds that companies shooting for that milestone still face.

As well as being a privately held, VC-backed company valued at $1bn, to be classed as a unicorn by Sifted, startups must have reached a $1bn valuation on any round prior to IPO or acquisition, been founded after 2005 and be both founded and headquartered in Europe. 

Companies valued at $1bn at IPO but never at any prior financing stage are not considered unicorns as they are no longer privately held at that valuation.

To help you keep track, Sifted has compiled a list of Europe’s unicorns using data from [Dealroom](https://dealroom.co/) and our own internal research, which will be kept up to date whenever a new company hits the $1bn valuation, or if an existing unicorn raises further funding.

The European ‘boot’ is one of only four countries — the others being France, Switzerland and Belgium — that have maintained positive growth rates over the first three quarters of 2022. Some $1.8bn has been poured into Italian startups so far this year, just twelve months after investment surpassed the $1bn ceiling for the first time.

B2B SaaS Rising 100 (2022)

The reference point of Europe’s tech landscape, the UK tops virtually every chart and metric of the region’s startup universe.

Its 48 unicorns and 40,000 startups get the most funding, close the most deals, and realise the most exits than any other country across the continent. It’s an increasingly mature tech space capable of pulling its weight against other global ecosystems.

While growth rates have slowed down in line with global market turmoil, the UK’s ecosystem value jumped 42.8% in 2021, and is steadily approaching $1tn — as much as Germany, France and Sweden combined, and third worldwide, according to Dealroom.

Sifted ranked the most promising startups across the UK in a weighted selection of new entries, older faces and fast-growing hits.

Home to the likes of Cabify, Glovo, and Paack, Spain is not only the leader of southern Europe’s tech scene, but also a competitive player across the continent.

The value of the Spanish ecosystem — measured as the total valuation of its startups — has grown nearly 40% on average each year over the last five years. The country closed the doors to 2021 with a blazing $500m Series E for staffing marketplace Jobandtalent, and walked into 2022 with another €101m Series E for Barcelona-based TravelPerk, adding up to its growing unicorn tally.

High hopes are set upon the fleet of exciting startups leading the way in the country. Sifted ranked the most promising amongst them — including big hits, household names and fast-growing wonders.
