Writer – commercial

Sifted is looking for a writer to join our fast-growing commercial team.

We’re looking for a writer with journalism experience who is interested in gaining valuable experience in the world of media.

This is a great job for someone with one to three years editorial experience and has a knowledge and interest in the tech and startup industries. We’re looking for someone who not only wants to write high-quality content for one of Europe’s leading startup publications, but also learn about the business of media and developing sponsored media projects, including podcasts, video and other creative projects. No other formal qualifications are required to apply, apart from the right to work in the UK.

We’re looking for friendly people with solid interviewing and writing skills — along with the other skills and aptitudes outlined below. We particularly welcome candidates from underrepresented communities.

What will you be doing?

Reporting to the Head of Content, it will be your mission to ensure branded content is held to a high editorial standard, interviewing clients and experts across sectors and researching industry trends.

Core duties include:

  • Write most branded content, including articles. This includes researching and interviewing experts.
  • Work closely with the Head of Content to ensure all sponsored content meets the client brief and deadlines.
  • Liaise with the editorial team to ensure articles are not only accurate, but are of a high editorial standard. Our goal is that all sponsored articles are of the same high quality as Sifted journalism.
  • Write roundup articles for Sifted Talks virtual panels and other relevant Sifted events.
  • Assist with commercial copy where needed, including multimedia projects such as video scripts and podcast storylines.
  • Act as an extra eye on events and social media copy.

Optional duties:

  • We would be delighted if the creative writer wanted to learn more about crafting pitches and creative project management.
  • The creative writer can also write non-sponsored stories for Sifted if their workload allows, developing a portfolio of writing and making contacts in the startup world that could serve them well in the future. Senior editors would work with them closely to report on great stories if desired.

What skills do you need?

  • Demonstrable writing experience, preferably in a fast-paced digital news or business publishing environment (this could be at a student publication)
  • Proven copyediting and subediting skills
  • Skilled at producing headlines optimised for digital platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Exceptional relationship management skills
  • Proactive, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Confidence in fact checking, interviewing and researching
  • Good knowledge of the startup and tech industry is desirable

Salary: £25,000 – £28,000 dependent on experience
