Sales Manager

As a sales manager at Sifted, you will be selling across all media products in Sifted’s ever-growing inventory. In addition to developing business opportunities from cold and warm leads, you’ll be working closely with other members of the commercial team including sales people, events producers, creatives and campaign managers to ensure that your client’s campaign expectations are met and exceeded.

Who we are

Sifted is the media platform reporting on the world of technology and startups in Europe, backed by the Financial Times. Two years after launching, we’ve become known for our high-quality journalism and fresh viewpoints, and a must-read for many founders, investors and people working in startups across the continent.

Our team of reporters, based across Europe, aren’t chasing after the latest funding announcements or product releases; plenty of other sites have got that covered. We are telling the stories that should be told — big startup trends, compelling company profiles and the everyday lessons that come from growing a business and messing up along the way.

We have grown from a standing start to over 500,000 monthly unique visitors, and over 60,000 newsletter subscribers, and have a lively social media following, but there is much more to be done to both grow and consolidate our readership.

In our first year selling media products and partnerships, we’ve helped over sixty clients position their brands and products with Sifted’s audience. We work with a diverse range of companies, from big tech, to large corporates, to early stage startups looking to increase their visibility. We’re constantly developing new products and so you’ll be selling lots of different media products. We’re lucky to have lots of inbound enquiries and so you’ll be picking up on red hot leads, as well as prospecting for the next big Sifted client.

What will you be doing?

As a sales manager, you are a champion of Sifted’s growth and brand. You’ll be reporting to the Partnerships Director, and will be responsible for driving revenue growth by selling across reports, branded content, events (digital for now!) and partnership campaigns. You’ll promote Sifted’s suite of products to both new and existing customers and negotiate sales contracts. In addition to selling, you’ll be a key point of contact for your clients, managing aspects of the account post-sale. You will take part in regular meetings with the Partnerships Director to align on project management, commercial opportunities and the sales pipeline.

You will:

  • Sell Sifted’s products including but not limited to digital advertising, content advertising, reports and events
  • Self-originate leads, and communicate with potential clients via email or phone
  • Attend relevant industry events to build your network (when it is safe to do so)
  • Manage the complete sales cycle of your clients, with support from senior staff where needed
  • Talk credibly with senior individuals from large corporates and investment firms about their business and make the connection between these companies and Sifted
  • Have a strong understanding of what ‘good’ looks like in the context of creative content ideas and campaigns — and be confident at creating commercial briefs
  • Support the wider sales team so that all sales targets are met (and exceeded!) with the ambition to manage your own sales team in the near future
  • Work collaboratively with various internal teams (marketing, editorial, dev) to ensure your client’s campaign goals are met and exceeded

Who you are:

  • You’ll have solid understanding of how publishing and digital media works — on both the editorial and the commercial sides of the business, from digital events to creative campaigns to reports
  • You’ll have a minimum of five year’s experience selling into events, publishing, advertising or other media sales for a credible organisation (this is a must) and be able to demonstrate a track record of exceeding your targets
  • You’re bright and possess strong business acumen
  • You’re excited to work in a fast-growing media startup
  • You’re confident, outgoing, driven and don’t give up
  • You’re target-orientated with the ability to meet and exceed KPIs
  • You have strong communication skills (written and oral) with experience in writing in-depth proposals with limited support
  • You have a positive attitude and can demonstrate excellent work ethic — we’re a startup and we are looking for people who want to be instrumental to its growth
  • You’re confident to work autonomously but also relish being part of a wider team
  • You’ll have a genuine interest in the media and publishing sector or in the technology startup ecosystem (both would be a major bonus!)
  • You have an interest in developing client relationships in mainland Europe (an additional language is a plus)

Location:

London (although we are open to semi-remote applicants — ie. people who could travel in a few days per week)
