Operations Manager

Operations Manager – immediate start

Sifted’s CEO, Caspar is looking for some help. This role is about working at Caspar’s side to take as much stuff as possible off his plate, and then to hand it back to the business with value added. The role will be extremely varied, and will provide exposure to all areas of the business, but with a particular focus initially on taking over and improving the finance, planning and reporting, HR and office processes that Caspar currently handles, and helping him make the most of his time.

It is anticipated that this role, and the person in it, is likely to evolve and grow over time, and this job may well act as a stepping stone to one of many other roles within Sifted. No specific qualifications or experience are required to apply; we’re first and foremost looking for somebody who ‘gets’ spreadsheets, is super organised, very keen to learn (fast) and a great communicator. We particularly welcome candidates from underrepresented communities.

Who we are

Sifted is the media platform reporting on the world of technology and startups in Europe, backed by the Financial Times. Two years after launching, we’ve become known for our high-quality journalism and fresh viewpoints, and a must-read for many founders, investors and people working in startups across the continent.

Our team of reporters, based across Europe, aren’t chasing after the latest funding announcements or product releases; plenty of other sites have got that covered. We are telling the stories that should be told — big startup trends, compelling company profiles and the everyday lessons that come from growing a business and messing up along the way.

We have grown from a standing start to over 500,000 monthly unique visitors, and over 60,000 newsletter subscribers, and have a lively social media following, but there is much more to be done to both grow and consolidate our readership.

What will you be doing?

You will be involved in almost everything that Caspar does, which is very varied. The activities below are just some examples of the kind of work this role will involve.

  • Keeping financial plans up to date and working with Caspar on forward forecasting and planning
  • Taking on and improving our ways of working with our outsourced book-keepers and accountants.
  • Improving our invoice handling, allocation and approval processes
  • Reviewing and improving our commercial sales tracking and reporting processes
  • Completing weekly and monthly performance tracking reports from multiple sources, and finding ways of automating/improving these processes
  • Research for forward planning and fundraising

  • Supporting in recruitment and contract creation, and taking on and improving all our team on-boarding and set-up processes
  • Leading on our office review/flexible working consultation and then working with Caspar and the team on implementing the conclusions
  • Managing day to day office issues and procurement requests
  • Consulting on, choosing and organising team social events and trips

  • Working with Caspar on weekly and monthly team meeting agendas and preparation
  • Working with the management team to ensure that their agendas are included in meetings as appropriate
  • Writing notes and keeping track of actionable items from management meetings
  • Preparing presentations and/or taking notes
  • Identifying areas for improvement anywhere in the business, and developing projects to address these

About you

This is a varied and wide ranging role with plenty of scope for development. The specific requirements are few, and general, and we actively invite diverse candidates to apply. The role will be well supported by Caspar and the rest of the management team.

  • Bright, highly numerate and completely comfortable with spreadsheets (and if not yet highly skilled in them willing to become so quickly)
  • Well organised, and takes pleasure in improving processes and making things work better
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence, and utter trustworthiness
  • A clear thinker and persuasive communicator
  • Must be available for (near) immediate start

Nice to have

  • Be passionate about making the European startup world a better place
  • An interest in media, especially data-driven media
  • Experience of finance and planning

What are we like to work for?

We value feedback, honesty and clear communication.

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary depending on experience, plus equity
  • 25 days of annual leave plus the usual public holidays
  • Flexible working hours and (post-lockdown) the option to work from home some days
  • Regular (virtual) team socials (quizzes, virtual lunches, bookclub etc.)
  • Weekly team lunches and seemingly endless snacks (when in the office)
  • The chance to have an impact across many areas of the business, and to build and be part of a large team over time
