Head of Design

Sifted is the media platform reporting on the world of technology and startups in Europe, backed by the Financial Times. Two years after launching, we’ve become known for our high-quality journalism and fresh viewpoints, and we’re a must-read for many founders, investors and people working in startups across the continent.

We’ve grown from a standing start to over 600k monthly unique visitors, over 90k newsletter subscribers and a lively social media following, but there’s much more to be done to both grow and consolidate our readership — and ship new products.

Our team is expanding rapidly and we’re looking for talented people to join, and we intend to double the size of our engineering team by the end of the year. Our offices are based in London (although we are open to semi-remote applicants — ie. people who could travel in 2/3 days per week).

Summary

You’ll be responsible for the design and of a new suite of Sifted products, working with an exceptional team of developers, product people, and executive leadership. You’ll help to create the future of data and reporting on European startups, as we expand our scope beyond media and journalism to become the leading insights platform for the European technology industry.

This is a senior position, reporting to the CEO, and we’re looking for someone with the flexibility to straddle both day to day design delivery and strategic thinking.

You are

  • A big lover of wireframing and prototyping. Comfortable with both quick sketching and creating high fidelity mockups
  • Great at simplifying complexity. We want to help people navigate complex information, especially as we ramp up our effort on data reporting
  • Experienced in building and evolving Design Systems, with the goal of fostering collaboration across the team and improving the Design to Code process
  • Have line managed and helped to build teams before
  • Able to own the brand and its identity and interested in leading our efforts in evolving our branding strategically, setting the tone for the whole company
  • Curious. You’re able to use both qualitative and quantitative techniques to understand how users experience our products
  • Passionate about startups, tech journalism, and good reporting
  • Unsure if you meet all of these? Apply anyway!

Nice to have

  • A passion for typography and experience with the use of typography in media
  • Illustration and graphic design expertise to help both our content on the site and on our other touchpoints to really pop
  • A strong understanding of how to manage multiple internal and external stakeholders and how to run workshops in order to extract knowledge in an engaging, fun way

What you’ll be doing

  • Research, design, test and implement strategic feature decisions for the whole Sifted brand, including our website, our various applications and products, and our offline presence and brand identity
  • Champion a vision for design at Sifted
  • Build our Design System from scratch and be in charge of evolving it
  • Hire and retain a world class design team

What we offer

You will be working with a super-sharp team that cares for each other.

Here, you’ll be able to do some of your best work, alongside some of the best brands, partners and contacts in the European startup world. You’ll have fun doing it too — we work hard to create a positive and supportive work environment.

In addition, we offer a competitive salary and early-stage equity, ownership of your career direction as the company grows, excellent regular feedback and a candid coaching process. You can work flexible hours and you’ll get to work with some of the best product people in the world.

We have a small-company mindset, but big company goals, and can draw on many of the strengths and benefits of a world-respected brand, the Financial Times. We’re friendly, hard-working and passionate about what we do. We have a flat structure, collaborate across disciplines and everyone has an impact across many areas of the business. We value feedback, honesty and clear communication.

What we offer

  • £70-80k salary + shares
  • Shiny new technical equipment — we’re a Mac shop generally, but are open to whatever suits your needs
  • £1,000 annual learning budget to spend on courses — or anything else that interests you!
  • 25 days of annual leave, plus the usual public holidays
  • Weekly team lunches and seemingly endless snacks (when in the office)
  • Regular team socials… post-lockdown (eg. pub quizzes, dinners, rounders games)
